Sustainability Policy

INTRODUCTION

Maracom is committed to promoting sustainability. We aim to promote good practice to reduce the environmental impact of all of our activities and to assist our clients and partners to do the same’.

Our corporate sustainability objectives are to work to minimise our carbon footprint, to promote the physical and mental health of our staff and use resources responsibly to ensure that our operations have a minimal impact on the environment.

Whilst Maracom is committed to continue to offer all our present services, we are continually investigating renewable energy solutions to dovetail with our existing services now and to encourage the adoption of environmentally sustainable practises for the future in partnership with our client base and supply chain.

PRINCIPLES

  • To comply with, and where reasonably practicable exceed, all applicable legislation, regulation and codes of practice.
  • To include sustainability considerations into the business decision making process;
  • To ensure that all staff understand the impact of our operations, have been made aware of the Sustainability Policy and are committed to is implementation and the future success of the policy as well as involvement in its ongoing review and improvement;
  • To minimise the environmental impact of all office and transportation activities;
  • To communicate our Sustainability Policy to all our clients, partners and suppliers and encourage them to adopt sustainable management practices;
  • To assist our clients to develop flexible energy strategies that are forward focused through intelligent design solutions and detailed assessment of the fabrics and materials used.
  • To work with our clients to consider the potential overheating performance of commercial buildings.
  • To seek to provide solutions to our clients owning buildings of historic value to enable those buildings to have a long-term viable future.
  • To promote the personal developed of staff to create high levels of physical and mental wellbeing.
  • To foster a culture of safety and accountability to influence positive behaviours both in and out of the workplace.
  • To annually review the Sustainability Policy and continually strive to improve our sustainability performance

ACTIONS

Recruitment

  • To recruit staff locally in the first instance and provide workplace opportunities for people in the local community.
  • To recruit apprentices for our training programme to develop long term skills.

 

Transport and vehicles

  • Fitting of speed limiters to industrial vehicles to regulate excessive fuel consumption and Co2 emissions for necessary travelling;
  • To acquire and regularly maintain vehicles that have the lowest CO2 emissions in the class.
  • To install electrical charging points at our offices and gradually replace the fleet of vehicles with electric vehicles.

 

Travel

  • Review the travel arrangements for attendance at business meetings and site visits. Where practical and/or cost effective walk, cycle or use public transport;
  • Avoid travelling to business meetings where alternatives may be available such as teleconferencing, video conferencing or web cams;
  • Be more efficient in the planning and timing of meetings to avoid multiple trips;
  • Investment in software for work planning scheduling and vehicle tracking to minimise the travel time and distance for engineers. Define work areas for engineers to avoid cross over and unnecessary travelling;
  • Reduce the need for staff to travel by actively supporting alternative working arrangements such as home working and including consideration of the use of public transport in the locating of offices in accessible locations.

 

Office

  • Minimise the use of paper and other office consumables. For example, double sided printing and printing of headed stationery as and when required from electronic templates;
  • Arrange for the recycling of office stationery including paper and computer supplies;
  • Encourage good housekeeping to reduce the energy consumption of office equipment including movement sensor lighting that switches off automatically;
  • Purchase electricity from suppliers committed to renewable energy;
  • Purchase fair-trade beverages.

 

Working Practices

  • Strip down, recycle or re-use boilers and materials where appropriate. Arrange for the recycling or responsible disposal of any materials removed from site using an approved supplier committed to sustainable practices;
  • Encourage engineering staff to undertake training on renewable energy sources to supplement their professional accreditation’s, for example air or ground source heating.
  • To invest in appropriate technology (eg design software) and training of staff to enable us to support clients with design solutions and energy optimisation to facilitate them to switch to renewables.

 

General

  • Pro-actively work with our suppliers in the development of sustainable materials and promote renewable energy products to our clients where appropriate;
  • Include a copy of our Sustainability Policy in all of our tenders to clients and applications to suppliers;
  • Install high efficiency systems sourced from manufacturers who display the mark, which certifies the product conforms to relevant European Directives on consumer safety, health and environmental requirements;
  • We are a registered company under the BESCA Part L Competent Person Scheme. BESCA is the only authorised Competent Persons Scheme to cover commercial work under part L – Energy Efficiency of the Building Regulations 2000, which governs any work that will affect the energy status of a building.  Issue a Building Regulations Compliance Certificate on all new installations to demonstrate that our installations are compliant with sections 4 and 7 of the Building Regulations 2000.
  • Ensure that we have a trained Mental Health First Aider that leads the may to promote mental health wellbeing as well as giving access to staff to 24 hour telephone support.
  • Encourage staff to participate in the company health care scheme and enjoy healthy lifestyles.
